Alternatives to utilizing locum tenens physicians

Have you ever relied on locum tenens coverage while searching for a permanent physician? Or to cover for your physicians’ vacations or sick time? If so, it may be time to consider alternative options.

Locum tenens can be very convenient, but also very expensive. Even short stretches of coverage can add up quickly. Furthermore, locum tenens is, by definition, a temporary solution. It doesn’t offer the continuity of care that your patients expect when they seek care at your hospital.

When it comes to ensuring coverage for your cardiovascular service line without locums, you have a couple of options.

Recruit and employ more cardiologists

The obvious answer here is to bring on more employed physicians. You’ll need at least 2-3 cardiologists to ensure 24/7 coverage and avoid burnout. Factors like hospital size, location, situation, and culture, will determine how challenging the recruitment process will be. If you’re able to offer an outstanding benefits package or you have a world-renowned cardiology program, it may not be too difficult. But, if you’re in a rural market or don’t yet have an interventional cardiology program, it could take months to assemble a team of physicians. And when time equals money, this solution has the potential to be a costly one.

After recruitment comes retention. Cardiologists, especially those with advanced training, are in high demand across the country and they’re always being presented with new opportunities. If your new physician decides to leave, you’re right back at square one and will have to start the recruitment process over again.

Seek out partnerships that will support your cardiology program for the long-term

If you don’t have the resources to recruit your own physicians, it may be beneficial to seek out a partner that can provide long-term physicians.

At CardioSolution, this is exactly what we do, day in and day out. No matter your situation, we can recruit top-quality physicians and ensure that you are able to offer 24/7/365 coverage for your patients. We aggressively advertise for your openings, thoroughly screen each candidate, and allow you to select those that you believe will be the best fit for your hospital. Better yet, we’ll credential 2-3 alternates so that even if one physician decides to pursue another opportunity, you’ll always be covered.

If you’re weighing your options, be sure to ask yourself, “What’s best for my patients and for my hospital, now and for the foreseeable future?”

CardioSolution offers a number of fully customizable service line solutions that can be tailored to meet the specific needs of your hospital and your patients. For more information on how we can meet all of your CVSL needs, click here.
